North Pond is a family-friendly swimming, fishing, and picnic area in Savoy Mountain State Forest. After parking, visitors will travel on a wheelchair-accessible path toward the park’s bathroom facilities. Then, on the right, there is a small beach and swimming area. These shallow waters are ideal for young kids to enjoy in the middle of summer. Surrounding the beach area, visitors will also find picnic tables and grills, perfect for a barbecue on a hot day.
The pond itself offers scenic views of the surrounding Western Massachusetts forest ecosystem. When the weather cools, the trees turn yellow and orange with the vibrance of fall foliage. There are also plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities; waterfowl and amphibians are often seen throughout the spring and summer.
Numerous easy hiking trails leave from the beach and travel next to the pond. Hikers can trek on the North Pond Loop, stroll through tranquil forests, and spot more wildlife species native to the Berkshires.
A large parking lot is on the shoulder of Center Shaft Road, just south of the boat launch. This section of the park also connects with the Savoy Mountain State Forest campground, where visitors will find campsites and wilderness cabins.
