About Balanced Rock Trailhead

The Balanced Rock Trail will bring visitors to a hiking and snowmobiling area in Savoy Mountain State Forest. Visitors will reach the pathway by crossing Ross Brook and hiking uphill on a double-track trail. After passing the Ross Brook Trail on the left, visitors will arrive at the Balanced Rock Trail on the right. This pathway will take visitors through a dense hemlock-birch forest where many local Western Massachusetts wildlife species, including salamanders and birds, are often visible from the trail. There are also countless animal tracks on the snow in the winter when the pathway becomes excellent for snowmobiling.

Continuing past the trailhead on the double-track trail, visitors will eventually arrive at balanced rock: a large boulder resting precariously at the top of a hill. This trail is 0.7 miles out and back.

Savoy Mountain State Forest is a large outdoor recreation area with plenty of opportunities for an enjoyable day in the Berkshires. The forest features campsites, swimming areas, and over 50 miles of hiking trails. In the summertime, the forest has various programming for overnight visitors at the local campground. The area is also open for hunting during the appropriate seasons.

Visitors should park at the end of a small dirt road off Tannery Road. Tannery Road is seasonal and becomes a groomed snowmobile trail in the winter. In winter it may look passable or recently plowed when groomed, but wheeled vehicles are prohibited.

This site has a small, uneven dirt parking area. The road that this parking area is located on is uneven dirt, covered with grass, sticks, and stones. To reach the trailhead, visitors must pass across this road and then walk down a 6% steep grass slope to a stream crossing. The stream crossing is necessary to reach the trail. There are large rocks on the stream bed and no bridge to help cross it. The trail is 3' narrow and uneven. It is not regularly maintained.
