Savoy Mountain State Forest
Savoy, MA
Hunting | Horseback Riding | Hiking
The Tannery Trail is a hiking and snowmobiling trail in Savoy Mountain State Forest. At the trailhead, visitors will encounter a wide pathway surrounded by a hemlock-birch forest. The route will eventually continue alongside Gulf Brook, which will remain audible until the end of the trail. Many local Western Massachusetts wildlife, including salamanders and snails, will be visible on this trail during the spring and summer. Then, in the wintertime, the pathway becomes ideal for snowmobiling. The path ultimately concludes at the beginning of Tannery Road, where visitors can access other hiking and snowmobiling routes within the state forest. This trail is 2.5 miles long.
Savoy Mountain State Forest is a large outdoor recreation area with plenty of opportunities for an enjoyable day in the Berkshires. The forest features campsites, swimming areas, and over 50 miles of hiking trails. In the summertime, the forest has various programming for overnight visitors at the local campground. The area is also open for hunting during the appropriate seasons.
The path leaves from the parking lot for the Tannery Falls Trail: a well-maintained pathway that showcases beautiful cascades and mossy rocks. Further down the road, visitors will encounter scenic views at a small pond.
Tannery Road is seasonal and becomes a groomed snowmobile trail in the winter. In winter it may look passable or recently plowed when groomed, but wheeled vehicles are prohibited.

There is a steep 6% grass slope up from the road to the trailhead. This leads to the trail, which is made of uneven dirt, and is covered with tall grass.
