Balanced Rock Trailhead
Savoy Mountain State Forest
Savoy, MA
Hunting | Horseback Riding | Hiking
The Ross Brook Trailhead will bring visitors to a small, moderate hiking trail in Savoy Mountain State Forest. Visitors will begin by crossing Ross Brook and hiking along an uphill two-track trail. Eventually, a sign and blue blazes will point hikers toward a narrow pathway along the brook. The sound of rushing water is constantly audible along this trail, and an abundance of local Western Massachusetts wildlife species are visible. After about one mile, the path will end near the parking lot for Tannery Falls. Here, visitors can follow the Tannery Falls Trail toward multiple beautiful cascades and, ultimately, an expansive 20-foot waterfall. It is a 2.9 mile out and back.
Savoy Mountain State Forest is a large outdoor recreation area with plenty of opportunities for an enjoyable day in the Berkshires. The forest features campsites, swimming areas, and over 50 miles of hiking trails. In the summertime, the forest has various programming for overnight visitors at the local campground. The area is also open for hunting during the appropriate seasons.
Visitors should park at the end of a small dirt road off Tannery Road. Tannery Road is seasonal and becomes a groomed snowmobile trail in the winter. In winter it may look passable or recently plowed when groomed, but wheeled vehicles are prohibited.
