Balanced Rock Trailhead
Savoy Mountain State Forest
Savoy, MA
Hunting | Horseback Riding | Hiking
This trailhead provides access to two pathways in Savoy Mountain State Forest. The Burnett Pond Trail, on the south side of Florida Road, is only available for hiking. The pathway travels through a dense grove of pines and crosses multiple streams. Eventually, hikers will arrive at Burnett Pond: a body of water with scenic views of the surrounding Western Massachusetts forest. When autumn begins, this pond bursts with the oranges and yellows of fall foliage. It is also an excellent place for wildlife viewing; amphibians and waterfowl are easily seen throughout the spring and summer.
On the north side of Florida Road, visitors will find the Black Bear Trail, perfect for hiking and snowmobiling. This wide gravel trail meets with the Shaker Trail, which eventually heads toward the Mahican-Mohawk long-distance pathway.
Savoy Mountain State Forest is a large outdoor recreation area with plenty of opportunities for an enjoyable day in the Berkshires. The forest features campsites, swimming areas, and over 50 miles of hiking trails. In the summertime, the forest has various programming for overnight visitors at the local campground. The area is also open for hunting during the appropriate seasons.
Visitors will find a large parking lot on the north side of Florida Road.
