About Visitor Center at Bear Swamp

The Visitor Center at Bear Swamp is an informational area at the Bear Swamp Hydroelectrical Dam, which generates power from the Deerfield River. Upon arrival at the parking lot, visitors will see a small picnic table in a grove of oak trees. These trees create ample shade across the lawn on hot summer days in Western Massachusetts. Visitors can bring lunch, picnic, and relax with friends or family.

The parking area also features an informational kiosk about the dam. Then, visitors will find further information beyond the parking lot at the visitor center.

On the Deerfield River, visitors will greet scenic views and diverse wildlife. Numerous local bird species, such as hawks and herons, are easily visible along the side of the river. The Berkshires also rise from the river’s edges, providing boaters with excellent mountain views at all times of the year. When the weather cools, these hills eventually turn yellow and orange with the vibrance of fall foliage.

There is a large parking area on River Road. Visitors should note that the center is only open seasonally on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
