Just before the Deerfield No. 5 station, visitors will find a designated take-out point for canoeing and kayaking along the Deerfield River. This river flows throughout Western Massachusetts and is well-known for fly fishing, rafting, and whitewater kayaking. Upon arrival at the take-out, visitors will find a stone beach for easy landing. Then, beyond the beach, a wide pathway travels up through the river’s banks. Eventually, a series of small stone steps will lead visitors to a loading/unloading zone at the road.
On the Deerfield River, visitors will greet scenic views and diverse wildlife. Numerous local bird species, such as hawks and herons, are easily visible along the side of the river. The Berkshires also rise from the river’s edges, providing boaters with excellent mountain views at all times of the year. When the weather cools, these hills eventually turn yellow and orange with the vibrance of fall foliage.
There is no designated parking area for Deerfield No. 5 station Take Out. Visitors can only park on the shoulder of the road for loading and unloading. A put-in area is further upstream, just past the Deerfield No. 5 Dam. On the website of Great River Hydro, visitors can find the water levels for the river.
