About Dunbar Brook Trailhead

The Dunbar Brook Trailhead will bring visitors to an expansive hiking area in Monroe State Forest. Overall, visitors will have many options for an enjoyable day of outdoor recreation in the Berkshires.

The Dunbar Brook Trail leaves directly from the parking lot and heads into a forest of hemlocks and maples. As visitors gradually ascend, they will continue along scenic views of Dunbar Brook. This babbling brook features rushing water, mossy rocks, and plenty of wildlife-viewing opportunities. Songbirds are often visible alongside the stream through summer, and local Western Massachusetts amphibian species are easy to find.

After continuing for about 1 mile, the pathway will soon reach a trail junction. Heading straight, visitors will proceed on the Dunbar Brook Trail. The remainder of the trail features stream crossings.

After reaching the trail’s end, which is 3.5 miles out, hikers can return on the Dunbar Brook Trail or loop back on other local paths. On South Road, visitors will descend a scrambly trail toward the first junction on the Dunbar Brook Trail. Visitors can also head to the Raycroft Overlook and access scenic views of the surrounding mountains.

A small parking lot is on the shoulder of River Road, just north of the Dunbar Brook Picnic Area.
