About Appalachian Trail Trailhead - Pattinson Road

This parking area is at the foot of the northern end of the Mt Greylock range. The parking area may be full in late July and early August, particularly on weekends. Another nearby parking area for A.T. day hikers is at Route 2 (State Road), which is 0.9 miles to the north. The Trail crossing at Rt 2 is also served by the BRTA.

The A.T. crosses the west end of the parking area. Northbound hikers turn right and proceed downhill, through the woods briefly before joining Phelps Ave and eventually crossing Rt 2 (State Road), before crossing the Hoosic River on a long footbridge, reaching Massachusetts Ave before climbing to the border of Massachusetts and Vermont.

Southbound visitors turn left, crossing Pattison Rd, then cross the outflow stream from Mt Williams Reservoir, and proceed through an aging stand of non-native Norway Spruce before crossing a dirt road and beginning a strenuous 1.6-mile climb to the overlook on Mt Prospect with expansive views to the west.

The A.T. makes a sharp left from the overlook, continuing to a junction with the Money Brook Trail. An overnight site for backpackers is located 0.3 miles down the Money Brook Trail. At 1.1 miles, the Money Brook Trail arrives at Money Brook Falls. At 3.5 miles, it terminates at the Hopper Road Trailhead in Williamstown. The A.T. continues southbound, crossing Notch Rd at the Wilburs Clearing Trailhead to the summit of Mt Greylock and beyond.

The Appalachian Trail (or A.T.) is a 2,100-mile footpath stretching from Maine to Georgia. Ninety miles of the Trail are in Massachusetts, traversing the Berkshires.  Local volunteers manage and maintain the footpath and the surrounding trail corridor in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and the National Park Service Appalachian Trail Park (NPS-APPA). While popular with both day hikers and backpackers, the A.T. is managed as a primitive backcountry trail with limited amenities. Visitors should dress for the range of expected weather, wear sturdy shoes, and carry the Ten Essentials on their hike.   Bicycles and motorized vehicles are not permitted on the A.T.  For more on the Appalachian Trail, visit the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s website
