Hiking
The Appalachian Trail is one of the most famous hiking trails in the United States, and it passes right through the heart of the Berkshires. It traverses countless environments from Georgia to Maine, and those who dare to hike the entire trail will have a life-changing experience. An access point to the Appalachian Trail on Monterey Road in Great Barrington provides a window into this experience so that anyone, regardless of hiking ability, can enjoy the trail. This part of the trail is very well-groomed and passes through a forest with a thick underbrush made up of ferns, mountain laurels, and many other bushes that grow under the forest canopy of Western Massachusetts. It is considered a moderately challenging part of the trail, given that it is relatively steep in some sections, and the path has some rocks and roots to avoid while hiking. However, the trail is broad enough to make it an easily accessible, family-friendly hiking destination in the Berkshires. A small parking area and a kiosk with signs and maps are also there to ensure that hikers have a fun and engaging experience hiking the Appalachian Trail.
