About Upper Gould Trailhead - Rockwell Road

The Upper Gould Trailhead will bring visitors to an extensive hiking area in Mount Greylock State Reservation. Hikers will have many options for an enjoyable day of outdoor recreation in the Berkshires. The Appalachian Trail—a 2,000+ mile hiking trail from Georgia to Maine—passes directly through the trailhead on its way to the summit of Mount Greylock. Going southbound on the path, visitors can reach a picturesque mountain pond and continue to descend through the State Reservation. Eventually, hikers will arrive in the Town of Cheshire.

The trail northbound will take hikers to panoramic scenic views at the summit of Mount Greylock. There, visitors will find the War Memorial Tower, a café, and a water-filling station.

The Gould Trail (5.5 mile loop) also leaves from this parking area. Hikers can descend on this trail and reach Peck's Brook Shelter, a backcountry camping area next to Peck's Brook Falls. The trail then continues until it reaches the mountain's base at Greylock Glen.

Visitors will find the trailhead across from the end of Notch Road, where it meets Summit Road and Rockwell Road. Because these roads are not open from late October until mid-May, visitors must arrive by foot or snowmobile during some parts of the year.

The State Reservation is open for hunting from October to May; however, it is prohibited within the Summit's War Memorial Park any time of the year.
