Appalachian Trail Trailhead - Rockwell Road
Mount Greylock State Reservation
Williamstown, MA
Snowshoeing | Hiking
The Bernard Farm Trailhead brings visitors to the State Reservation gate at Notch Road. During winter, when the summit road is closed, this trailhead provides visitors access to Mount Greylock State Reservation.
Upon arrival, visitors will find a trailhead with a small informational kiosk. The Bernard Farm Trail leaves from this trailhead and heads into a forest of oaks and maples. When the weather begins to warm in the springtime, the sides of this trail abound with ephemeral wildflowers and other local wildlife species.
The trail runs for 4.9 miles before turning into the Appalachian Trail, which continues to climb Mount Greylock for an additional 2.4 miles.
Eventually, after hiking along a steady incline, the path will steeply climb and cross Notch Road. Hikers will continue to ascend for about two miles until reaching an old plane crash. Then, visitors will arrive at the Appalachian Trail further down the path.
The Appalachian Trail, which travels through the Berkshires on its way from Georgia to Maine, will take visitors to expansive scenic views at the summit of Mount Greylock. Visitors can also hike northbound on the trail and arrive at the top of Mount Williams.
Visitors will find parking on Notch Road, just before the gated entrance to the State Reservation. The State Reservation is open for hunting from October to May; however, it is prohibited within the Summit's War Memorial Park any time of the year.
Tell others about this place
This site has a large gravel parking lot. The lot has several large holes and loose gravel, some of which are 2 inches in diameter. This makes the parking lot uneven. The trail is only 2-feet wide for its duration. The trail is comprised of dirt and climbs up Mount Williams, making it quite steep at times (up to 10%).
