About Notch Gate, Bernard Farm Trailhead

The Bernard Farm Trailhead brings visitors to the State Reservation gate at Notch Road. During winter, when the summit road is closed, this trailhead provides visitors access to Mount Greylock State Reservation.

Upon arrival, visitors will find a trailhead with a small informational kiosk. The Bernard Farm Trail leaves from this trailhead and heads into a forest of oaks and maples. When the weather begins to warm in the springtime, the sides of this trail abound with ephemeral wildflowers and other local wildlife species.

Eventually, after hiking along a steady incline, the path will steeply climb and cross Notch Road. Hikers will continue to ascend for about two miles until reaching an old plane crash. Then, visitors will arrive at the Appalachian Trail further down the path.

The Appalachian Trail, which travels through the Berkshires on its way from Georgia to Maine, will take visitors to expansive scenic views at the summit of Mount Greylock. Visitors can also hike northbound on the trail and arrive at the top of Mount Williams.

Visitors will find parking on Notch Road, just before the gated entrance to the State Reservation. The State Reservation is open for hunting from Columbus Day to May 19th; however, it is prohibited within the Summit's War Memorial Park any time of the year.
