What to know before you go

Safety first! Lakes, rivers, and streams present risks beyond pool swimming, even for experienced swimmers. Take heed from the US Forest Service's Water Safety guidance, and get tips about swimming in lakes, rivers, and streams from the Red Cross. If you don't know how to swim, wear a life vest that meets US Coast Guard requirements.

Know the rules. In addition to reviewing posted regulations at designated swimming areas, keep in mind that some municipally managed spots have residency restrictions. Check their websites for the most up-to-date information.

Best Practices for Open Water Swimming: The DCR regulations, although written specifically for one body of water, contain several helpful guidelines applicable to open water swimming in the Berkshires.
