About Umpachene Falls Park

The park is for New Marlborough residents and their guests only.

Umpachene Falls Park is a scenic town park along the Umpachene and Konkapot Rivers. The park is highlighted by the serene Umpachene Falls, a slow waterfall that cascades peacefully from the Umpachene into the Konkapot. The shallow and rocky waters make it easy to walk into the river and look at the falls up close, and the falls create several pools that are easy to wade through. Those looking to go for a swim can enter the Konkapot River, whose lazy waters make it a relaxing place to take a dip, and it is especially popular among children. The river has a soft, sandy bottom that makes it more pleasant to stand in than the Umpachene. On the other hand, the rocky outcrops of the Umpachene make for picturesque spots to lay down and enjoy a sunny day in the Berkshires.

On the shore is a large grassy field with picnic tables, grills, a swing set, and plenty of open space to lay down, throw a frisbee, and take in the beauty of the Berkshires. Since the park is easy to access and relatively small, locals enjoy quick visits after work or school, with birding, fishing, and simply relaxing in the park being popular activities. The Konkapot is a trout-stocked river, but it is not as easy to secure a catch here as in other larger rivers in Western Massachusetts.

The park can be accessed from a dedicated lot on Umpachene Falls Road. A short walk down a dirt path and over a wooden bridge lead to the park. Note that access is restricted to New Marlborough residents and their guests only unless permission is granted by the groundskeeper. However, the land to the west of the Konkapot River is owned by the Commonwealth and can be used to access the water, although there is no dedicated parking or access point for this area.
