About Mount Wilcox Trailhead

The Mount Wilcox Trail is one of the longest trails in Beartown State Forest, and it is packed with sights to see since it passes through many diverse ecosystems and environments. Hikers on this trail will have something new to enjoy at every turn. The evergreen forests on the trail are filled with spruce and pine trees, and the deciduous forests with oak, ash, and maple trees. The underbrush of these forests is filled with vibrantly colored plants, such as ferns, mountain laurels, and hobblebush. Hikers should watch their step as they traverse through the Mount Wilcox Trail, as below their feet lies an ecosystem filled with life in the form of brightly colored mushrooms and wildflowers that range from red to orange to even purple, and also red efts, a type of small newt commonly found in forests such as Beartown.

The trail itself is moderately challenging, as it is a long trail with some steep inclines. Although it is a bit of a rougher path due to a decent amount of rocks and roots, it is well-maintained and provides a fun and engaging experience for hikers. For those looking for a longer hike, combine with the Beartown Mountain Trail for an adventurous 10.5 mile loop. A large parking lot is available for visitors, and the Mount Wilcox trailhead is only a short walk away across a bridge that crosses over a small stream. The Mount Wilcox Trail is a fantastic adventure for hikers looking for a challenging hike in the Berkshires.
