About Spruce Trail

The Spruce Trail is located within October Mountain State Forest in Washington, MA. This wide dirt trail is designed for motorized vehicles such as dirt bikes and ATVs, but also provides use for hikers and mountain bikers. This trail is wide and nearly clear of all debris, making it a fun and less challenging ride for visitors on motorized vehicles and bikes. Riders and hikers can enjoy the scenery as they traverse the dense evergreen forests of the Berkshires, filled with native pine and spruce trees. Spruce Trail runs for .7 miles before connecting with Navin Trail and into the wider trail network located in October Mountain State Forest.

Winding through October Mountain State Forest, the forest displays the vastly diverse wilderness and scenery prevalent in Western Massachusetts. Countless bird and animal species call this forest home, such as white-tailed deer, turkeys, red-tailed hawks, and even bears, so riders and hikers should watch to spot them rustling through the underbrush or soaring through the treetops. A wide variety of vegetation and fungi make this part of the forest one of the more vibrant parts of the Berkshires.

October Mountain is 16,500 acres, making it the largest state forest in Massachusetts. Its expansive area provides space for many additional outdoor recreation opportunities, such as snowmobiling or hunting. As a state forest, October Mountain is owned and managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. Their website linked below lists site-specific rules and updates.
