Pittsfield, MA
Open Water Swimming | Fishing | Beach
Pontoosuc Lake Park Picnic Area is a family-friendly green space managed by the City of Pittsfield. The park is ideal for a short pitstop on a warm summer day in Western Massachusetts.
Upon arrival at the park, visitors will find numerous picnic tables within a grove of tall spruce trees. The terrain then slopes downward to the lake, offering expansive scenic views of the Berkshires. Families can picnic and watch the lake reflect the hills above. Eventually, when the weather begins to cool in fall, this area features the yellows and oranges of fall colors on the mountains.
After eating lunch, visitors can walk down a series of steps to the lake's edge. Here, there are opportunities for fishing and birdwatching. There is also a designated beach off Route 7, where swimmers can cool down on hot days.
Pontoosuc Lake is a "great pond" with a high density of homes and businesses along the shores. The lake is excellent for boating, paddling, and fishing in the summertime. It is also suitable for ice fishing in winter.
Visitors will find a large parking lot for the picnic area off westbound Hancock Road, just after the boat launch. The City of Pittsfield currently has plans to further develop this park and its facilities in the future.
