About Springside Park

Springside Park is a hiking and mountain biking trailhead managed by the City of Pittsfield. Visitors will have several options for an enjoyable day of outdoor recreation in the Berkshires. Multiple trails leave from the trailhead, all traveling on varied terrain. Visitors will soon find themselves in an exciting labyrinth of pathways through forests, meadows, and wetlands. Plenty of local Western Massachusetts wildlife species, including birds and insects, are visible along the trails throughout the summertime. Wildflowers also abound when the weather begins to warm in spring.

Eventually, the trails connect to other features of the park, such as the local arboretum and a small pavilion. Visitors will also find a playground and a picnic table near the trailhead.

Springside Park is a 237-acre property managed by the City of Pittsfield. The property grew from the Springside House, constructed in the mid-1800s. After almost becoming a commercial golf course, the park experienced a revival and is now home to numerous Western Massachusetts outdoor recreation opportunities. The city currently plans to renovate the park's facilities, including possibly adding a mountain bike park.

Visitors will find a small parking lot at the end of the Springside Park dirt road, which branches directly from North Street.

Accessibility Assessment

There are no accessible features at this location.

The parking area at Springside Park is a small gravel pull-off at the end of the Springside Park dirt road. The pull-off is uneven and grassy and does not have any formal accessible parking spaces. There is no path access to the playing fields from the parking area, as visitors must walk through the grass to access them. The parking area also provides visitors with access to miles of trails inside the park. There are a variety of trails inside Springside Park, some of which are wide and smooth, measuring approximately 6 to 8 feet in width, while others are narrow and steep, measuring 1 to 2 feet in width and featuring grades of over 12%. The physical conditions of the trails are also variable, with some being grassy and smooth, while others are rocky and rooted. Many sections of these trails are accessible for adaptive equipment, such as adaptive mountain bikes. However, these trails do contain narrow, rocky, and steep sections that may make accessibility difficult. The trails also connect to other features inside Springside Park; the accessibility of these features varies.
