Cheshire Cobble Trailhead
Chalet WMA
Cheshire, MA
Snowshoeing | Hunting | Hiking
The Driscoll Road Parking Area is located in Windsor and serves as an access point to the northeastern portion of the Chalet Wildlife Management Area. Chalet WMA is owned by MassWildlife and offers the public opportunities for hiking, fishing, trapping, hunting, and wildlife viewing in the Berkshires. Hiking into Chalet WMA will provide visitors with an intentionally unmaintained natural forested landscape that may require visitors to bushwhack along their journey. Not far from the Driscoll parking area, on the border of Dalton and Windsor, a rare red spruce swamp exists and heads Tyler Brook. Its associated wetlands provide fishing potential and wetland birding opportunities. Woodchuck Hill is slightly northwest of the parking area, and its peak is one of the highest points in the WMA.
Visitors can expect the land to consist of diverse tree species, agricultural fields in its northern portion, points of varying elevation, and streams. The Appalachian Trail runs through the western portion of Chalet WMA, which can provide visitors with hiking trails.
Common game for hunters includes (but is not limited to) white-tailed deer, eastern coyote, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, and snowshoe hare. Finding and viewing black bears, moose, bobcats, and beavers is also possible in the WMA. Chalet Wildlife Management Area’s 7,796-acre property touches and is accessible in the towns of Windsor, Cheshire, Dalton, and Lanesborough. The property is an excellent place for a more primitive Western Massachusetts outdoor experience. Important to note, hunting is prohibited on the Appalachian Trail. Refer to the State of Massachusetts hunting regulations website for more hunting rules and regulations.
