About Cookson State Forest - Route 183
The Route 183 access to the Cookson State Forest provides trail access to the interior of the state forest. Hikers can enjoy a hike to the beautiful East Indies Pond and the Thousand Acre Swamp. Hiking the entire loop around the forest is over 11 miles, but shorter trips are possible. Hikers and boaters can also access the forest from several locations on Hotchkiss Road in New Marlborough. Although they are not allowed, off-road vehicles often use the trails and have created their own network of trails, so caution must be used to ensure you stay on the correct trail.
