Peter Wool’s property in Sandisfield is open to the public from dawn to dusk for nature exploration and recreation while also being managed for timber, wildlife habitat, scenic beauty, and water quality protection. Located near the intersection of West and Lower West Streets in the northwest corner of the town, the property abuts the West Lake and Abbey Pond Flood Control Site owned by the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation (MA DCR) as part of Sandisfield State Forest. The 67-acre property has been in the Wool family since 1932 and primarily managed for timber, with timber harvests occurring in 1935, 1989, and in 2020. Several of the main skid roads and the log landing now form the framework for the newly-created trail system. There are three trails on the parcel marked with tree tags: the Turkey Trail (green), the Deer Trail (blue), and the Black Bear Trail (red), offering just over 1 mile of easy terrain. Directional signs are located at trail junctions. A 3-season parking area (not maintained in winter) for 4 vehicles is located off Lower West Street and a kiosk offers an overview map and property information.
