About Wild Acres

Wild Acres is a wildlife park and hiking area in the City of Pittsfield. At the park, visitors will find a picnic pavilion and bathroom facilities. Overall, the property is ideal for family-friendly gatherings in Western Massachusetts.

Past the pavilion, there is a two mile expansive network of easy hiking trails. Upon leaving the parking lot, visitors will travel through a forest of tall pines and find numerous benches to rest on. Then, continuing straight down the trail, visitors will arrive at an expansive wetland. A lookout tower is at the bottom of this trail, perfect for wildlife viewing in all seasons. Migratory birds often stop in the marshes along their journey, and amphibians are easily heard throughout the spring and summer. There is also an excellent view of the Berkshires beyond the wetlands.

The trail will then bring visitors alongside the Pittsfield Municipal Airport. On this part of the trail, hikers can see aircraft take off throughout the day. Then, soon after this section, the pathway passes a tranquil pond with several benches.

Visitors will find a large parking lot at the end of a long driveway that intersects with South Mountain Road. If the main gate is closed, an additional parking lot is located halfway down the driveway.

The parking area at Wild Acres is a large gravel parking lot with two paved accessible parking spaces. From the parking area, a 4-foot-wide paved path runs to a pavilion area, as well as a set of restrooms. The pavilion is paved, and the bathroom features a 10-foot-wide wooden ramp leading up to it. The bathrooms are specifically designed to be ADA accessible. From the parking area, a 4-foot-wide, hard-packed gravel path also leads to a small pond. This trail is smooth and stays mostly flat, making it wheelchair and stroller-friendly. A set of dirt trails diverge from this main gravel trail. These dirt trails are more rocky and rooted than the gravel trail and have more variable conditions. One of the lakes has a viewing deck overlooking the pond. To access this deck, visitors will have to step up a set of stairs.
