Durant Park is a two-acre playground and picnic area managed by the City of Pittsfield. The park is perfect for a family-friendly day of outdoor recreation in the Berkshires.
Near Columbus Avenue, visitors will find an outdoor basketball court. This athletic space is ideal for both individual practice and competitive team play. Next to the court, there is also a table and a grill. Families can host a picnic and play basketball on warm summer days.
Visitors will see the West Branch of the Housatonic River along the side of the park. A forest of floodplain trees borders the river, providing plenty of opportunities to see local Western Massachusetts wildlife species. Birds abound in this forest throughout spring and summer.
A woodchipped playground, bathroom facilities, and a pavilion are on the other side of the park. Tall trees populate this section of the park, creating ample shade on hot days. An interactive paved kids' path also travels along the river here.
There is no designated parking for Durant Park. Visitors can either park on the shoulder of Columbus Avenue or John Street.
Tell others about this place
There is no designated parking area for Durant Park, so visitors should park on nearby streets when safe. There are three entrances to Durant Park, one on Columbus Avenue and two on John Street. The entrance on Columbus Ave and one of the entrances on John St are both 3 to 4 feet wide paved path entrances. The other entrance on John St is a 4-foot-wide gravel path running around a gate. A path runs across the park from the paved entrance on John St to the entrance on Columbus Ave. This path provides visitors with access to a pavilion, the main playground, bathrooms, and a basketball court. The main playground has a wood lip surrounding it that ranges from a couple of inches deep to a couple of feet high. A 4-foot-wide ramp provides visitors with access from the path to the wood-chipped surface of the playground. A little further down, there is a swing set, a 1-inch lip surrounds it, and there is no ramp access. The path leading to the basketball court is broken up by roots that have created breaks and lips in the path. As it nears the court, the path increases to over 12% slope. There is also a second pavilion, separated from the path by grass, and a slide that is similarly situated.
