Wilber Park is located on Route 8 in Sandisfield and overlooks the Farmington River. The park offers picnic tables and a manicured grass lawn, but perhaps most notably includes memorials commemorating and providing information on New Boston, the town's early-America-era village district.
Whether to eat lunch along the Farmington River or read up on local history, Wilber Park is an interesting place to stop during a drive through southeastern Berkshire County. With a parking area for one car, visitors may be required to park along the side of the road.
New Boston was founded along the Farmington River after Boston residents settled in the area during the mid-1700s. The area became a lively commercial center during the 1800s and was the district's civic center. Additionally, the New Boston Inn was founded during the 1700s and still exists across the street from Wilber Park, making it the oldest inn in Berkshire County. New Boston recently earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior, giving the small Western Massachusetts Town of Sandisfield a token of recognition and history.
Wilber Park is dedicated to Samuel R. Wilber, a late Sandisfield native and resident.
