Allen Mountain Wildlife Conservation Easement is a 217-acre parcel on Town Hill Road in Sandisfield. Primarily consisting of a mixed woods forest, the property is ideal for hunting and wildlife viewing. Though the landscape does not include maintained trails, adventurous explorers can navigate the forest to find a few landmarks.
Heading east from the parking area on Town Hill Road, hikers can summit Allen Mountain, which gives them a view of Clam Lake, the vast forest, and glimpses of the Berkshire mountains. Clam Lake and its attached brook are located east of the Allen Mountain Summit. Whether hunting, viewing wildlife, or seeking to explore a forest, Allen Mountain WCE provides an opportunity to experience these activities primitively in a rugged Western Massachusetts landscape.
Per MassWildlife, a wildlife conservation easement demands its property be maintained with a focus on conserving the natural landscape (or more specific aspects of the land) while remaining in possession of the landowner. Landowners of conservation easements have agreed to grant the public access to the land, which is typically open for fishing, hunting, and trapping.
Allen Mountain is home to wildlife typical in the northeastern United States, including white-tailed deer, black bear, coyote, and moose. Its rural location heightens the likelihood of encountering said species.
