Hanging Mountain in Sandisfield offers premier rock-climbing opportunities at southern New England's second-largest climbing destination. The mountain features a 1000-foot-long series of granite and gneiss cliffs ranging from 60 to 240 feet in height. There are over 80 climbing routes, including full-bolted sport, mixed, and traditional climbs. It is owned entirely by climbers.
This Berkshires crag is ideal for middle to upper-middle-level climbers. Its range of trail difficulties does not include climbing suitable for beginners and is less challenging for elite climbers. Since portions of the cliffs are unstable and climbers may encounter loose rock, dry tooling and ice climbing are not advised. Visitors are expected to wear a helmet, especially when belaying.
The Western Massachusetts Climbers Coalition owns the 14 acres comprising Hanging Mountain and manages the land in collaboration with Connecticut's Ragged Mountain Foundation. Visitors should consider donating $5 at the parking lot when using the crag to ensure the local non-profit ownership and management of Hanging Mountain can be sustained.
Much of the land has been designated as priority habitat by MassWildlife, meaning any development or changes to the area must comply with the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act and Wetlands Protection Act.
