About Three Mile Pond

Three Mile Pond, located in the Three Mile Pond Wildlife Management Area, is the largest pond in Sheffield. Situated over calcareous bedrock, the mineral-rich pond is one of just two calcareous ponds in Massachusetts, the other of which is also located in the Berkshires. This geologic phenomenon increases the pH of the water, which allows the pond to harbor unique fauna and plant life. In the early season, the pond is typically clear and easy to traverse while later in the season, vegetation can make it hard to navigate. A boat launch by the west Brush Hill Road Parking Area allows paddlers to enter the water, whether kayaking, canoeing, or standup paddleboarding. In the right conditions, the pond can be crystal clear, but normally it is cloudy.

Fishing is common in the pond, as bass are abundant. Anglers also have success reeling in chain pickerel, yellow perch, brown bullhead, and sunfish. The pond is also an excellent spot for wildlife viewing, as many mammals and species of birds call the Three Mile Pond Wildlife Management Area their home. The pond’s two mile perimeter (yes, it is two miles) takes paddlers through a serene environment nestled under the rolling hills of Western Massachusetts. The surrounding hardwood forest, full of red oaks and sugar maples, makes the pond an excellent spot to view vibrant fall foliage. Parking can be found at two locations on Brush Hill Road. The Cross Road parking location does not provide access to the pond.
