About Myrin Preserve

The Myrin Preserve is a little-known but beautiful nature preserve in Great Barrington's Monument Valley. With over 300 acres of land, the preserve offers abundant space for wildlife viewing. The preserve is devoted to maintaining the natural habitat of local species, such as beavers, muskrats, otters, and other mammals. The property is also prime for birding, especially during migration seasons when various species pass through Western Massachusetts. Although the property has hiking trails, they are unmarked and minimally invasive, so visitors should be well-versed in navigating a natural area unguided. A trail map can be found on the Myin Institute's website. Since the institute's primary goal of the preserve is environmental protection, visitors are encouraged to limit foot traffic and engage with the site courteously, as this will allow the site to remain open to the public as one of the most unique experiences in the Berkshires.

The preserve can be accessed from the intersection of Blue Hill Road and Monument Valley Road, where there is a small gravel turn-around for parking. When entering the site along the grassy path, a small pond emerges. Past the water and to the right is the property's main artery, which connects visitors to the Barbieri Reservoir—a picturesque hook-shaped pond teeming with wildlife. While the property is expansive, visitors should use caution to remain within the property boundaries, as the surrounding property is private. Hunting is strictly prohibited.
