About Middlefield Road Parking Area

The Middlefield Road Parking Area provides access to the eastern section of the Tracy Pond Wildlife Management Area. This access point is best suited for hunting, as it gives direct access to a dense forest teeming with wildlife. White-tailed deer and black bears are the most abundant game species, while waterfowl can be found by Tracy Pond in the northwest section of the property. Additionally, the pond is a suitable fishing area as it contains many warm-water fish species. A small brook that feeds into Tracy Pond can be found in the center of the WMA.

The Tracy Pond Wildlife Management Area is relatively small at just over 300 acres, but it borders the Middlefield State Forest, providing access to a more expansive natural landscape for those looking to explore more of the Western Massachusetts wilderness. Still, the Tracy Pond WMA is sufficient for most hunters' needs. It is ideal for people seeking a rich wildlife habitat without venturing too far off the beaten path. The landscape is relatively hilly as steep slopes rise from Tracy Pond, though there is some flat land to the east of the water. Most of the property rests between 1550 and 1850 feet as it lies in the highlands of the Berkshires.

The Middlefield Road Parking Area is an unofficial pulloff on the side of the road by the intersection of Middlefield Road and South Road. Here, visitors will find a concrete platform that fits a single vehicle, where a slight clearing in the forest edge gives way to an old, overgrown forest road running along the WMA's eastern edge. Visitors should bring waterproof boots for the marshy environment around Tracy Pond.
