About Tracy Pond WMA

The Tracy Pond Wildlife Management Area offers hunting and fishing opportunities on a 300-acre property. The property is best known for Tracy Pond, a small but serene warm-water fishery. This pond is easily accessible from the parking area, as a short maintained trail brings visitors to its shore. In addition to the pond, the WMA provides hunting opportunities with its healthy wildlife habitat. White-tailed deer, black bears, coyotes, and ruffed grouse are abundant, while waterfowl are present in the pond and its tributary brook, Tracy Brook. The forest is comprised of mixed hardwoods and pines, showcasing a diverse collection of trees that thrive in the Berkshires. Visitors can enjoy a mostly flat topography near the pond, but elsewhere, the property consists of steep slopes rising 200 to 300 feet.

Wildlife viewing and birding are common near Tracy Pond due to the pond's accessibility and the wide-open views it provides of the surrounding environment. Many aquatic and semi-aquatic species call the pond home, particularly beavers. Wildlife enthusiasts who wish to venture into the forest can find a variety of mammals. Although the property is relatively small, it is sufficient for the needs of most visitors. Those looking to extend their reach can pass over the southern border of the WMA into the Middlefield State Forest, earning the opportunity to explore more of the natural environment of Western Massachusetts.

The Tracy Pond Wildlife Management Area can be accessed on a tucked-away, unmarked dirt driveway off Middlefield Road in Peru. This driveway is just a few hundred feet east of the Kilburn Brook crossing and provides access to a large parking area. Besides a trail connecting the parking area to Tracy Pond, the WMA has no maintained trails, so visitors should be prepared to navigate the property independently.
