Long Mountain WMA Giles Rd East
Long Mountain WMA
Otis, MA
Hunting
The Long Mountain Wildlife Management Area is located in Otis and can be accessed via informal parking on Giles Road. The WMA is intentionally unmaintained and provides prime opportunities for fishing, hiking, hunting, trapping, and wildlife viewing. Noteworthy is the necessity to bushwhack along the journey in the WMA due to the primitive Western Massachusetts landscape, which enhances quality of fishing, hunting, and birding by fostering diverse ecosystems and wildlife.
The Long Mountain Wildlife Management area contains multiple high-elevation hilltops, including the 1,900-foot Kingsbury Mountain. Small waterbodies such as Mud Pond, Hayes Pond, Benton Brook, and Hayden Swamp diversify the landscape and provide fishing opportunities. In addition to waterfowl and aquatic furbearers attracted by the pond, white-tail deer, wild turkey, black bear, bobcat, red fox, ruffed grouse, American woodcock, crow, and eastern coyote are animals found in the WMA. These provide both hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities. Prospective hunters should refer to the Massachusetts hunting regulations website to ensure safe and legal practices.
This 1,000-acre Wildlife Management Area is one of Massachusetts’ many managed and conserved areas in the Berkshires. Long Mountain Wildlife Management Area is a great location for rugged outdoor recreation activities in the uniquely primitive and mountainous landscape for which Berkshire County is acclaimed.
