River Road in Windsor provides informal roadside parking spaces for accessing the Westfield River and the Upper Westfield River Wildlife Management Area. Most of the WMA is forested with a mix of hard and softwood trees, with some floodplains along the river. Ideal for hunting and fishing, the property (and any other WMA) is intentionally unmaintained and provides visitors with a more primitive outdoor experience. Hunters have opportunities to find white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, bobcats, eastern coyotes, ruffed grouse, opossums, and numerous other animals common in Western Massachusetts. Westfield River is ideal for trout fishing and comprises both stocked and wild brook trout, and its east branch contains many rare species. Explorers with a keen eye may scout moose, monarch butterflies, and beaver dams. The Westfield River WMA provides serene and unique Berkshires outdoor recreation opportunities.
Most of the Westfield River Wildlife Management Area is located on the east side of River Road, along with the Westfield River. The 329-acre WMA touches the towns of Cummington, Plainfield, and Windsor, and is included in the 220,000 acres owned and managed by MassWildlife to enhance biodiversity conservation. Prospective hunters should reference the State of Massachusetts hunting regulations website to ensure safe and legal hunting practices.

River Road provides informal roadside access to the Westfield River. There are pullouts on the side of the road where visitors can park, but these pullouts are frequently grassy and uneven, making accessibility difficult for some visitors. From the pullout parking areas, visitors will have to contend with thick shrubbery and rocky, uneven terrain to reach the river. This can further impede accessibility for some visitors. The parking areas also provide visitors access to the Westfield River WMA, which has no maintained trails and is comprised of dense forests. Westfield River and the Westfield River WMA are perfect for those seeking a more primitive outdoor experience. All visitors should be cautious of accessibility impediments such as rocky and uneven terrain, dense forests, and standing water.
