About Plunkett Reservoir Boat Launch

The Plunkett Reservoir Boat Launch provides boating access to Plunkett Reservoir, whose 73 acres of pristine water attracts recreational paddlers, anglers, and watersports enthusiasts. A trip around the reservoir's perimeter is approximately 1.5 miles, providing sights of summer camps, lake homes, and the serene forestry of Western Massachusetts. Although somewhat small, this reservoir is wide open, making activities like jet skiing, wakeboarding, and other motorized sports appealing. Plunkett Reservoir feeds into Fissell Brook, which leads to the Housatonic River before meandering through the Berkshires.

Heading counterclockwise from the boat launch, boaters will pass by Camp Romaca, an all-girls summer camp, next to which rests a tiny island. Many enjoy stopping for a quick break and viewing the lake from this secluded spot. Additionally, the water is shallow around the island, making it a viable space for swimming. Continuing around the perimeter, boaters see countless lake homes and private docks, and on the eastern section of the reservoir, encounter an earthen dam. There is a valve control house filled with initials and writings from hundreds of kids, likely from campers at the multiple summer camps surrounding the lake.

Fishing is popular at the easily accessible reservoir, as bass and trout are common catches. Yellow perch is also a worthwhile target when the water freezes. Since Plunkett Reservoir is surrounded by development, it does not attract large wildlife populations. The water is treated with herbicide, making it relatively free of debris and vegetation. The reservoir is quite easy to navigate, whether kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, or motorboating. 

Access to the boat launch can be found off Longview Avenue, where there is a small pulloff for launching a boat. Since this is not an official parking spot, boaters should unload their equipment at the boat launch before parking their vehicle at the beach.
