About Moscow Road Parking

The Moscow Road Parking area provides access to the Maple Hill Wildlife Management Area, which is a large, forested space with excellent hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities. The parking area leads visitors to the lowest section of the property as it rests next to the Williams River, a stocked trout stream lined with rare plant species. Navigating through the forest here can be tricky as invasive plant species and prickers densely pack many areas of the forest. Still, the land is passable and provides excellent space for hunting white-tail deer, black bear, and turkey. Toward the river, waterfowl are abundant along with river otter, beaver, mink, and muskrat. Wildlife enthusiasts can also enjoy the large collection of non-game species in the wetlands by the river and in the forest's rich mesic habitat that is common in Western Massachusetts.

From the parking area, the peak of Maple Hill can be reached by trekking south across the face of the hill for about 1.5 miles before turning right to ascend the steep slopes that lead to the 1,750-foot peak. From the peak, views of surrounding mountains and the Taconic Range sneak into view in openings in the tree cover. These views are much more visible in the late fall and winter when the trees lose their leaves. To the peak's north is a large blueberry clearing, common in the Berkshires. This can be the perfect spot for birding or even finding a bear, as the berries make a delicious snack. Since this wildlife management area is undeveloped, it is best fit for experienced hikers who can traverse the rugged terrain independently without maintained trails.
