About Monterey Outdoor Skating Rink

The Monterey Outdoor Skating Rink is a semi-enclosed pavilion for ice skating. The rink's operating status depends on the weather, as ice can only be made when temperatures permit. Fortunately, since the rink is semi-enclosed, occasional days of poor weather or rain do not cause the rink to close. Still, long stretches of high temperatures can melt the ice completely. Although the Berkshires have some of the coldest winters in Massachusetts, temperatures can swing wildly, so the rink is best suited for a spontaneous visit rather than one planned far in advance.

The rink is usually not busy, giving visitors enough room to practice figure skating, learn to glide for the first time, or even play hockey as long as they use soft pucks. While the rink is managed by the town's Fire Department, the community takes an active role in setting up and taking down the rink, maintaining its condition, and ensuring the safety of others. As one of the smallest Western Massachusetts towns, Monterey is known for its tight-knit community, which allows assets like these to be available for all to enjoy.

When available, the rink is open from 9am to 9pm. A small storage room is available, and there is a collection of ice skates in many sizes for all to borrow for free. Otherwise, there are not many amenities at this rink, so visitors should come prepared with necessary items.
