About Lindon Bates Memorial State Park

Lindon Bates Memorial State Park is a small hiking and ATV area near Pittsfield State Forest. Upon arrival at the parking lot, visitors will see a two-track pathway leading uphill. This two-track, the Beacon Trail, is a 2-mile loop that travels throughout the surrounding forest. Plenty of local wildlife species, including salamanders and birds, are visible in this ecosystem throughout the year.

Across the road, visitors will also find several additional hiking trails in Pittsfield State Forest. The Taconic Crest Trail, for example, starts at the pull-off and ascends to Berry Pond. Ultimately, this trail treks 30 miles northward through the Berkshires and into Vermont.

Linden Bates Memorial State Park has a cemetery plot along Route 20, which is centered around a memorial to Lindon W. Bates, Jr., namesake of the park, who perished with the sinking of hte cruise liner Lusitania in 1915.

Visitors will find a small parking area on eastbound Route 20, south of the rest area pull-off and on the wide shoulder near the gate.

Accessibility Assessment

There are no accessible features at this location.

This site has a small spot for pull-off shoulder parking directly off Route 20. The ground on the shoulder is uneven. There is a steep (9%) grass hill that leads up to the trailhead. The trail is intended for OHV use only and therefore has large rocks, logs, and uneven dirt ground.
