The Division Street Boat Launch for the Housatonic River allows paddlers to access the river and paddle through a relatively undisturbed section of the river. Visitors can head upstream to the Rising Paper Dam, a remnant of the old Rising Paper mill in Housatonic, or downstream toward Great Barrington's downtown, which requires navigating a few tricky rapids. In both directions, the river is teeming with wildlife and can make for a picturesque exploration of the Berkshires. Painted turtles, wading birds, and carp are plentiful to the south. Those who enjoy birding should also be on the lookout for Baltimore Orioles and, on a lucky day, may catch the sight of a Bald Eagle, which is rare in Western Massachusetts but occasionally gets spotted around the Housatonic River. Anglers also station themselves by the boat launch as they enjoy the peaceful fishing area. Further down the river at the confluence of the Williams River, there is an excellent trout stream.
The trip along the river offers excellent views of Monument Mountain and the Taconic Range, showcasing the Housatonic's many natural features. Before heading home, visitors enjoy grabbing a farm-fresh snack from Taft Farms Market down the road. There is limited parking at the boat launch.
