About Dolomite Ledges WMA

The Dolomite Ledges Wildlife Management Area provides access to a unique environment in the Berkshires. Nestled under the commanding ascent of ledges and outcrops of dolomite, a magnesium-rich limestone, the property best suits those seeking a space for hunting, wildlife viewing, or primitively exploring the lesser-known areas of Western Massachusetts. Visitors can wander the mostly sparse forest along Route 41, and about 500 feet perpendicular to the road rests one of many steep ledges. This ledge is passable with some effort, leading to a small plateau guarded by a steep dolomite westward ledge. For continued ascent, the best bet is to head northwest along the ledge's face before momentarily leaving the Wildlife Management Area, then encountering the unmaintained Dave Chapin Trail that returns to the WMA and ascends South Pinnacle, a rarely-summited peak at about 2,050 feet of elevation.

Although hunting is limited by the steep topography of the property, hunters have success catching deer, turkey, bobcats, and occasionally bears. The property has no water, and most vegetation consists of conifers and oaks. Visitors should be well-versed in navigating tricky terrain independently without trail markings or amenities. Over time, foot traffic has created occasional trail-like features in the forest, but they are short and are not great for navigation. There is a small, informal parking area along Route 41.
