About Day Mountain WMA

Day Mountain Wildlife Management Area is located on East Street in Dalton. The 382 acre property is owned and managed by MassWildlife to conserve biodiversity while providing opportunities for public outdoor recreational activities. The Appalachian Trail runs through the western portion of the Day Mountain Wildlife Management Area, though the majority of the WMA's landscape is natural and excludes maintained trails. Hunting opportunities are available on the property but can not be conducted on the Appalachian Trail. White-tailed deer, turkey, and ruffed grouse are typical game on the Day Mountain WMA. For more information about specific rules and regulations related to hunting in Massachusetts, use this link.

The Day Mountain Wildlife Management Area is home to an assortment of trees, primarily including hardwoods such as sugar maple, with white pines scattered throughout. The natural landscape provides opportunities for encountering various animal species and may function as an optimal site for birding in the Berkshires. Since much of the land is not maintained, The Day Moutain Wildlife Management Area offers visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a fully natural Western Massachusetts forest and experience more rugged hiking in the Berkshires. For additional information, utilize the Massachusetts Government website link explaining the Day Mountain WMA and WMAs more generally.
