About Campbell Falls State Park

Campbell Falls State Park is a joint park straddling the border of Connecticut and Massachusetts that enchants visitors with its picturesque waterfall and forested hiking trails. The falls can be accessed from a short but steep trail from the Massachusetts trailhead, or it can be reached from a trail on the Connecticut side. The 50-foot waterfall plunges through lush evergreen forest before forming a small pool where visitors can dip their feet on a hot day. From the pool, the water cascades gradually down the Whiting River, which loops through the town of New Marlborough before returning to Connecticut. The zig-zagging gorge through which the waterfall runs gives Campbell Falls a unique identity that makes for a truly memorable experience.

The park offers fishing access to the Whiting River. Although other nearby rivers have higher fish populations, the Whiting provides a romantic, pristine environment in the background of Campbell Falls, making for one of the more unique fishing areas in Western Massachusetts. Additionally, wildlife viewing and birding opportunities around the river are abundant. Those looking to spend an extended time soaking in the beautiful environment will appreciate that the gorge keeps the temperature low on a hot summer day.

Often overlooked due to the popularity of nearby Bash Bish Falls, the Campbell Falls State Park is considered one of the best hidden gems in the Berkshires. Particularly after an intense rainstorm, the falls roar with great intensity, and a visible waterfall mist blankets the surrounding area. In the winter, the frozen waterfall resembles a small glacier as snowmelt flows through the gorge. The park is rarely crowded, which makes it even more attractive on a weekend or holiday when other nearby parks fill up. The falls are best accessed from the Massachusetts trailhead on Campbell Falls Road in New Marlborough next to the state line.

Additional parking can be found on the Connecticut side of the park, a medium sized gravel lot off Spaulding Road. The Connecticut side of the park holds room for at least six cars but requires a .5-mile easy hike to reach the falls.
