About Tracy Brook Wildlife Sanctuary

Tracy Brook Wildlife Sanctuary is located on Swamp Road in Richmond and offers a unique opportunity for wildlife viewing in the Berkshires. The sanctuary is a 21-acre combination of wetlands and woodlands, hundreds of yards from Richmond Pond. Defined by its beaver pond and marsh, the sanctuary's habitat is also home to otters and waterfowl and is underneath a forested hill. Providing exceptional birding opportunities and a remarkable landscape, Tracy Brook Wildlife Sanctuary is a perfect place to stop and enjoy the natural beauty of Western Massachusetts. Special in the springtime, visitors may catch glimpses of herons feeding their newborns.

Mass Audobon seeks to preserve land for both wildlife biodiversity and human enjoyment, and Tracy Brook Wildlife Sanctuary is part of its 36,500 acres of protected land. The sanctuary was generously donated by a couple with local roots, who were initially awestruck by watching the herons feeding their youth. Their donation was motivated by the insurance of the land's protection and the prospect of other people experiencing and enjoying the space.

A pull-off is available on Swamp Road for passersby to stop and observe the sanctuary, which may unveil the wildlife mentioned above. Two active beaver dams are home to dozens of the industrious animals.
