About McLennan Reservation

McLennan Reservation, managed by The Trustees of Reservations, offers hikers an exceptional opportunity to explore the woods of the Berkshires. The site contains a 1.5-mile loop trail that circles the perimeter of Round Mountain and passes by Hale Pond at its highest point. Although the trail does not summit Round Mountain, bushwhackers are welcome to climb another 100 feet to the peak. Still, they should be advised that tree coverage blocks the view. Hale Pond, saddled between Round Mountain and Long Mountain, resulted from beaver dams over Camp Brook. Wildlife thrives in the McLennan Reservation, creating a rich ecosystem that thrills visitors interested in birding and wildlife viewing.

While the site is most frequented in the summer, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular winter activities at the reservation. At all times of year, visitors enjoy the serene environment of the multiple streams running along the trail, especially after a rainstorm or snowmelt. As one of The Trustees' lesser-known properties, the reservation can be one of the best places to find solitude in Western Massachusetts. For adventurous individuals, Challinor Conservation Area can be accessed by bushwhacking north along the old road and is open to the public for hiking, hunting, and wildlife viewing.
