The Lehovec Natural Area is located along the Green River in Williamstown. Visitors can enter an opening in the forest from the parking area at the end of Woodlawn Drive. After a short descent into the forest and arrival at a T-junction, visitors can turn left to explore the Lehovec Natural Area. The initial walk offers a relatively open grass path running alongside and in between Woodlawn Drive and the Green River. With dense vegetation on either side of the trail, the river does not fully come into view until the Lehovec River Walk.
After about a hundred yards, signage posted to a tree indicates the beginning of the Lehovec River Walk, where a narrow dirt trail strays from the current path into the forest. The trail heads east for a few hundred feet before reaching the Green River, which has similarly curved east. Following the river as it returns from its short excursion east, the trail loops back onto the initial grass trail. From here, visitors wishing to extend their walk can continue north towards the Mohican Trail.
Green River and its adjacent floodplain forest create a unique opportunity for viewing wildlife in the Berkshires. Donated to Williamstown Rural Lands as a 10-acre parcel by the Lehovec family, the Lehovec Natural Area is an excellent place to explore and access a network of Western Massachusetts hiking trails.
