About Fernwood Forest Campground

Fernwood Forest Campground is a family-friendly camping area rich with amenities in the heart of Hinsdale. The campground features over 40 secluded campsites for tents and RVs, and campers are available for rent. Fernwood is known for providing clean and well-maintained facilities that offer countless activities throughout the day and night. Volleyball courts, basketball courts, tetherball poles, and horseshoe pits scatter the campground, and a woodchip playground can entertain the youngest visitors. Additionally, the Plunkett Reservoir Beach is just a quarter-mile walk down the road, where it is easy to spend hours swimming, paddling, picnicking, and playing. Even on a rainy day, campers can enjoy themselves inside the recreation hall, with plenty of space for gathering, playing air hockey, or finding a tucked-away corner to read a book.

With so many different activities, the Fernwood Forest Campground is perfect for a family camping excursion in the Berkshires. In addition to the many recreational opportunities at the campsite, there is free Wi-Fi, hot showers, and laundry services, making Fernwood excellent for those looking to retreat into the forest without losing touch with convenient modern services. Campers staying for an extended period enjoy venturing further from the campground and checking out the many local attractions, including the Appalachian Trail, which runs just west of the campground and offers a full-day hiking experience for the more adventurous visitors. Nestled in the hills of Western Massachusetts, visitors can access endless outdoor recreational opportunities near the campground.

The campground can be accessed off Longview Avenue, where a red sign identifies the entrance. Since the campground provides multiple amenities and activities, it is primarily meant for people staying multiple days. Each campsite has a picnic table, stone fire ring, and drinking water spout. Reservations can be booked on the campground's website.

Accessibility Assessment

There are no accessible features at this location.

When visitors arrive at Fernwood Forest Campground, there will be two gravel roads splitting off from each other. One gravel road runs directly into the park while the other runs up to the office. These gravel roads are relatively smooth and flat as they run through the campground, although the road up to the office can exceed 12% slope. Fernwood Forest offers a variety of different campsite options, with the two main ones being camper and tent sites. Both of these site types consist of a flat dirt camp pad with direct road access to the rest of the campground. Fernwood Forest offers a variety of amenities for visitors. Firstly, they offer laundry services, and the laundry room is only accessible via a set of stairs. The campground also offers a recreation hall. The recreation hall is separated from the main campground road by a grassy area and is only accessible via stairs. The grass is flat, and the stairs are sturdy. Further into the campground is a playground and pavilion area. The playground features a variety of play equipment, and although there is no direct access from the main road, the playground's grass is flat and even. By the playground, there is a pavilion; however, there is no direct path access, but there is a wooden ramp leading from the grass field up to the pavilion. The wood ramp is 4 ft wide with a slope of around 12%. Adjacent to the playground are the bathrooms, which are only accessible via stairs; however, the bathrooms do offer a wider, more accessible stall.
