About Farnams Causeway

Farnams Causeway is a family-friendly park and fishing area on the southern end of the Cheshire Reservoir. Upon arrival, visitors to the causeway will find an expansive lawn with small maple trees, benches, and picnic tables. The park offers a scenic view of the Berkshires, and fall colors are often vibrant here when the cold weather arrives. Wildlife viewing is also excellent from the causeway. Waterfowl often stop in the reservoir during migration, and many other Western Massachusetts bird species are easily heard throughout the summer. There are also numerous fishing opportunities in this park. On the north side of the causeway, visitors will find fishing piers. On the south side, there is a boat launch into the middle basin of the reservoir.

The park also acts as a trailhead for the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail: a 14 mile walking and biking trail from North Adams to Pittsfield. Going northward, visitors can bike or walk along panoramic views of the reservoir and the mountains. A southern route, on the other hand, will take visitors through a tunnel of trees.

The park has facilities, including two bathrooms. Parking is on Farnams Road, facing toward the North Basin of the reservoir.

A paved path runs parallel to the parking lot along the shore of Cheshire Reservoir. The parking lot is paved and connects directly to the path. Portions of the path along the reservoir have been impacted by uprooting and make for an uneven surface; however, most of the path is well surfaced. Picnic tables connected to the path feature accessible seating options. Along the path there are several accessible fishing locations. The restroom is also accessible. Visitors can travel along the road a short distance and reach the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, which is paved. The boat launch at Farnam’s Causeway is a mix of dirt and gravel with a slight slope to the water. The surface of the ramp is relatively smooth, but can get muddy.
