About Mount Greylock Summit

The Summit of Mount Greylock offers many options for an enjoyable day of outdoor recreation in Western Massachusetts. First, this summit area is a perfect family-friendly lunchtime picnic spot. After leaving the parking lot, visitors will eventually arrive at an open field with the tall War Memorial. Beyond the memorial, the summit provides expansive scenic views of the Berkshires. Visitors can relax on the lawn, eat lunch, and watch the clouds pass overhead. They can also climb to the top of the War Memorial, which has further panoramic views of the landscape. Nearby, visitors will find that Bascom Lodge serves food and drinks throughout the summer.

The summit is also a great launch point for hiking trails in Mount Greylock State Reservation. The Appalachian Trail, a long-distance pathway from Georgia to Maine, passes through the summit and connects with other paths. Visitors can hike northbound to North Adams, or they can travel southbound to Cheshire.

For a shorter hike, visitors can hike on the Overlook Trail or the Robinson's Point Trail. These trails branch from the Appalachian Trail and feature excellent views toward the west.

Visitors can drive to the summit from mid-May until late October when the Summit Road is open. Throughout winter and early spring, the peak is only accessible by foot or snowmobile. The State Reservation is open for hunting from Columbus Day to May 19th; however, it is prohibited within the Summit's War Memorial Park any time of the year.
