About Farnams Hill

Farnams Hill is a 178-acre land parcel located on Route 7 in Lanesborough. The property comprises fields, an old orchard, vernal pools, streams, and wetlands. Its diverse habitats provide a home for various animal and bird species, and its currently unmaintained landscape is attractive for visitors seeking an experience in the rugged outdoor setting of Western Massachusetts.

Berkshire Natural Resources Council plans to cut hiking trails through the property in the coming years. In addition to connecting a portion of the BNRC’s High Road Trail, their parcel ownership ensures land between the Taconic Ridge and Cheshire Reservoir remains protected. The property may also be connected to the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail via another plot of land owned by BNRC.

Farnams Hill is an old farm with buildings torn down before its recent acquisition. Berkshire Natural Resources Council plans to provide some historical information regarding the property along the trails, honoring and contextualizing the previous land use for interested visitors. A top priority, BNRC will ensure that the trails on Farnams Hill are built sustainably and thoughtfully so as not to disturb any wildlife or habitats.

A small parking lot is available off Route 7 at 310 N Main Street. The property is open now, though it requires bushwacking for much of its exploration.
