About Beartown State Forest Campground

NOTE: The Beartown State Forest Campground is temporarily closed for renovation and upgrades.

Nestled on the shore of Benedict Pond, Beartown State Forest Campground offers 12 wooded sites, with a few of them located right on the pond's shore. With many surrounding recreational spaces, this campsite is perfect for a family camping trip. Adjacent to the campgrounds are multiple hiking trails, including the beloved Benedict Pond Loop and the Appalachian Trail. These trails provide a delightful opportunity to explore the Beartown State Forest throughout the year, whether by hiking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing. Many mountain bike trails are also near the campsite and spread throughout Beartown. Benedict Pond offers a beautiful site for water activity atop the higher grounds of Western Massachusetts, surrounded by undisturbed forest. The man-made pond is a memorable place for kayaking and canoeing, and swimming is available in marked sections during the summer. The pond is also one of the most popular fishing areas in town, as pickerel, yellow perch, and bass are common catches.

Wildlife is abundant around the campground, as countless mammals call Beartown State Forest their home, including white-tailed deer, rabbits, coyotes, black bears, bobcats, raccoons, and red and grey foxes. Hunting is permitted in most sections of the Beartown State Forest, including near the campsite. Mountain laurel lines the shores of Benedict Pond, giving it a snow-like glow when it blooms in late spring. As a northern hardwood forest, the area is renowned for having some of the most vibrant fall foliage in the Berkshires.

Campsite amenities include firepits, picnic benches, food storage lockers, and toilets. Black bears are common visitors to this campground, so campers must follow proper safety procedures to limit interactions with this animal. This includes storing food and cooking items in the storage lockers and not approaching bears. Parking is available by the pond.
