SUMMARY:Dovekie Day with Hoffmann Bird Club
DESCRIPTION:Join the Hoffmann Bird Club for the first Annual Dovekie Day! Beginning as an April Fools Joke\, a wooden Dovekie was carved and set on Smiley’s Pond in Egremont. After a bit of confusion and skepticism\, the Dovekie was retrieved and now lives to tell the tale every year. Dovekie Day is a morning of birding in search of  the hidden Dovekie. The carved Dovekie will be placed on a Berkshire County water body the evening before the event.\n\nTeams will race to be the first to find the Dovekie by 12PM. Teams will get points for when they find the Dovekie and points for every bird they see along the way\, with a bit of mayhem and jokes mixed in. Dovekie Day can be enjoyed on foot or easily by car and will be followed by a celebration at noon. This is not a typical “birding competition”\, this is a morning of fun and laughs.\n\nRegistration required! Register on the Hoffmann website here by April 2nd.

SUMMARY:Walks on Stone Hill: Beyond the Cows and the Art
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the other trails on Stone Hill\, in the wooded area beyond the iconic pasture and fancy fences. \nThis is a family and first-timer friendly hike/walk on the main routes in the Stone Hill trail network beyond the Clark Art Institute campus — but we will not ignore the famous panoramic views of Williamstown and the surrounding hills. \nOur route will cover the full range of hiking/walking opportunities available in the area\, so some folks might find short sections somewhat challenging for 15 minutes or so\, but most of the route will be on old roadbeds and fairly flat.  On most of the route the trail tread will have some uneven surfaces (the route is unpaved) and there will be some muddy/wet places and tree roots to walk over from time to time.  If you are a bit unsteady on your feet\, consider bringing a walking stick or hiking poles. \nOur pace will be slow\, and we’ll stop to chat and catch our breath. In all\, we’ll cover about 2 miles of the trail network and you can expect to spend about an hour and half in the woods and fields.  There are “bail out” options that offer a more direct path back to our starting point if your time is limited. \nRegistration required: learn more and sign up here at the event website.

SUMMARY:Bidwell Outside the House Hike
DESCRIPTION:Western Mass Hilltown Hikers Group Hike \nBidwell Outside the House Hike \nApril 26th at 10:00 am (approximately 3.5 to 4 hours) \nParking:  100 Art School Road\, Monterey\, MA  01245 \nHike Rating: Easy to Moderate 3.5 miles loop with very little elevation \n  \nJoin local historian Rob Hoogs on a hike through 18th and 19th century history following the 1760’s colonial Royal Hemlock Road and visit several cellar holes and a charcoal hearth. We will also follow the beautiful Loom Brook and cross the Boston-Albany Post Road all while listening to the history of the land we are traveling.  The Bidwell House was built circa 1760 for the first minister of Township No. 1\, the Reverend Adonijah Bidwell (1716-1784). He arrived in 1750 to be the first minister of this frontier region\, which eventually became the towns of Monterey and Tyringham. The location of the house was the first town center of what was originally known as Housatonic Township No. 1. The Bidwell House was the parsonage\, and the first meeting house\, located at the crossroads of the Great Trail (the Boston-Albany Post Road) and Royal Hemlock Road\, was a short walk from the house. Rev. Bidwell farmed the property from 1750 to 1784. His eldest son\, Adonijah Bidwell Jr.\, developed the farm into a large and prosperous dairy farm\, expanding the landholdings and building a compound of barns and out-buildings. His tenure was 1784-1836. The grandson\, John Devotion Bidwell (1792-1867)\, continued to farm and also added a tanning yard.  Please Note:  Event does NOT include a tour of inside the house.

SUMMARY:Guided Hike: Spring Wildflower Walk
DESCRIPTION:Spring ephemerals mark the beginning of flowers in New England\, emerging before the full leafing of deciduous trees. Will we spy the deep maroon of Trilliums\, fanciful Dutchman’s Breeches or Yellow Trout Lily?  Come enjoy a spring stroll through the northern hardwood forest at the base of Berlin Mountain in Williamstown to see what wild ephemerals are up and learn about these hardy early flowers. \nOn this hike\, we will be walking out-and-back along the WRLF Loop Trail\, about 1.5 miles round-trip. This trail goes down a short hill from the parking lot and then continues on a slight hill parallel to Haley Brook\, downhill on the way out and uphill on the way back. We will not be crossing the brook.  Some stretches of trail near the parking lot may be wet. There are some sections of trail with wooden bog bridges. \nRegistration required: learn more and sign up at the event website. \nWilliamstown Rural Lands is a non-profit\, member-supported land conservation trust. We conserve and promote the forests\, fields\, farms and natural habitats of our region for the benefit of our communities and future generations.

SUMMARY:Guided Hike: Solstice Evening Hike Down the Shepherd’s Well Trail
DESCRIPTION:Join Williamstown Rural Lands for a summer solstice hike! On this evening the sun will set at 8:36 pm. In the hour before sunset the light filters through the trees at a low angle intensifying colors. Clouds can turn subtle pink or orange. This hike passes through beautiful woods and offers some spectacular open views looking west or looking east towards Mount Greylock.\n\nExcept for a brief steep uphill beginning\, this 1.5 mile hike is one-way mostly downhill. We will meet at the large parking lot at Petersburg Pass on Route 2 just across the New York State border and shuttle some cars down to our ending point. Then we will hike north from Petersburg Pass along the Taconic Crest Trail and east down the Shepherd’s Well Trail. This hike is suitable for both experienced and inexperienced hikers who are confident walkers. We will take a leisurely pace\, stopping to admire the views\, and will finish just before dark. SUMMARY:Guided Hike: Bee Hill and Flora's Glen via Fitch Trail
DESCRIPTION:Join Williamstown Rural Lands for a 4 mile hike overtop Bee Hill and down Flora’s Glen. \nWe’ll start at Sheep Hill in Williamstown with a climb up open fields to Bee Hill Road\, then through mixed woodlands on the Fitch Trail to the high point of Bee Hill\, passing some extraordinary old Sugar Maples along the way. Descend through hemlock groves to the RRR Brooks Trail\, returning along Flora’s Glen Brook to the remains of an old mill pond on Bee Hill Rd. \nThe trail starts in an open\, mowed field — the path is on grass to start — but most of the hike is in the woods on rooty\, rocky trails. Initial strenuous climbing leads to Bee Hill\, and a moderate descent returns us to Bee Hill Road. Much of the descent through Flora’s Glen features a narrow path with a steep drop-off to one side. \nRegistration required: learn more and sign up at the event website. \nWilliamstown Rural Lands is a non-profit\, member-supported land conservation trust. We conserve and promote the forests\, fields\, farms and natural habitats of our region for the benefit of our communities and future generations. \n

SUMMARY:Writing For The Wild
DESCRIPTION:WRITING FOR THE WILD\nSundays\, September 7 & 14\, 12:00 – 4:00 pm  \nNature writing is not just a genre\, it’s an ongoing conversation with Earth. A way of listening\, remembering\, and belonging. This immersive two-part workshop with Vanessa Chakour invites writers of all levels into deeper conversation with the wild within and around us. We’ll explore the many facets of nature writing while cultivating intimacy with the more-than-human world and expanding ecological literacy. \nTogether\, we’ll reflect on what compels us to write on behalf of the wild\, who we’re writing for\, and how to shape poetry and prose that honor our interdependence. We’ll explore memoir\, poetry\, and research-driven science writing\, as well as imaginative approaches like writing to and from the perspective of other species. \nWhether sitting with a white pine on the Mount grounds during our outdoor writing sessions\, or drawing on a memory that lives in your body\, this workshop invites you to slow down and write from a place of deep attention. Through readings\, writing prompts\, intimate discussion\, and outdoor activities\, we’ll explore how nature writing can foster healing and amplify the voices of our more-than-human kin. \nBetween sessions\, writers will be encouraged to continue our practices\, to keep a nature journal\, and bring writing to share the following week. We’ll also discuss pathways to publication and how to become an advocate for Earth in a time of ecological crisis — when wild neighbors desperately need our voices. \nABOUT VANESSA: \nVanessa Chakour is a naturalist\, author\, and land steward who builds emotional and ecological bridges between humans and nature. Through writing\, immersive retreats\, and collaborative storytelling\, she invites deeper connection with plants\, animals\, and land. Her books\, Awakening Artemis and Earthly Bodies\, blend memoir with calls to kinship\, exploring the interdependent paths of personal and ecological healing. Vanessa has collaborated with organizations like the Wolf Conservation Center and Jaguar Rescue Center\, and as a Project Coyote ambassador\, facilitates conversations that inspire reverence for our multispecies family. A devoted student of nature\, Vanessa continually seeks creative and regenerative pathways toward coexistence. \nDISCOUNT CODE IN HONOR OF MONARCH MIGRATION: \nOur time together coincides with the peak monarch butterfly migration through Massachusetts — an incredible phenomenon that unfolds across thousands of miles and multiple generations. Monarchs travel 50–100 miles a day\, guided not by maps\, but by genetic memory. It takes up to three generations to complete their journey to Mexico\, each butterfly continuing on a path they have never flown before. \nTo honor their extraordinary migration\, we’re offering a special discount through September 1. Type MONARCH60 into the registration link to receive $60 off and join an intimate circle of voices writing on behalf of the wild.

GPS 42.279567\, -72.988070 \nHike Rating: Easy 2.5 miles in and back\, mostly flat terrain on dirt with options for more\, guided tour with handouts \nJoin us to walk on a section of the Chester and Becket Railroad. Built in 1896 as a 5.25-mile spur off the Boston & Albany Railroad to deliver granite from the Becket Quarries to the Chester finishing works. Both Chester and Becket issued bond stock in the quarry company to help in building this line because there was money to be made from the “Chester Blue Granite” for monuments and gravestones. This railroad was blasted out of the steep and winding side of the Walker Brook Valley. The first locomotive to run on this line was a wood burner\, eventually upgraded to a coal burning locomotive. We will see the remains of a wooden trestle still standing on the trail and also learn how this route was used in Chester’s Emery and Granite industry. Optional continuation on the railbed to the Boston and Albany Connector (3 miles).   Donations for the newly conserved Chester Granite Company Finishing Works property are greatly appreciated. \nWe will hike rain or shine. During the winter of 1775-1776 Gen George Washington held the high ground around Boston while the British were firmly in control of the city. If Washington had artillery\, he could dislodge the British and retake Boston. The nearest available artillery was at Fort Ticonderoga\, under Continental Army control\, in up-state NY. Gen Henry Knox then was commissioned in Dec 1775\, by Gen Washington to secure these artillery pieces and transport them from NY\, through Massachusetts to Dorchester Heights outside Boston. To do this Gen Knox successfully crossed the Berkshire Mountains and large rivers in winter\, with 59 pieces of artillery. When the artillery arrived in Boston in early March 1776\, Gen Howe realized the hopelessness of his position and evacuated the city. \nWe will hike rain or shine.
